Before

The existence of a stage, as well as its temporal and spatial dimension, and, in essence, the very existence of biostratigraphy is fauna-related, dependent upon the occurrence, the development and the extinction of the fauna or upon the extinction of part of its fauna. One stage is a faunal community existing in a certain space and at a certain time; in other words, it is a matter of Palaeoecology, just like world history means the history of human societies fragmented into eras, periods and cultures comparable to the geological stages and sub-stages where technological developments (namely, the emergence of new artifacts) take the place of fossils. Let us remember that, until recently, there were Paleolithic cultures and that in the Neolithic, all the marginal human communities were living, technologically speaking, in the past. This is why a stage, Pontian for example, may have different positions in absolute ages, from one areal to another.

The existence of a stage—as well as its temporal and spatial dimensions, and in fact the very concept of biostratigraphy—is fauna related, dependent upon the occurrence, development, and extinction of the fauna in whole or in part. One stage is a faunal community existing in a certain space and at a certain time; in other words, it is a matter of palaeoecology. The conventions of geological stages and substages can be seen as similar to world history, which describes the history of human societies fragmented into eras, periods, and cultures, and where technological developments (namely, the emergence of new artifacts) take the place of fossils. Let us remember that, until recently, there were Paleolithic cultures and that in the Neolithic all the marginal human communities were living, technologically speaking, in the past. This is why a stage, the Pontian for example, may have different positions in absolute age from one area to another.
